Akhil Kumar was born on March 27, 1981. He is a famous Indian boxer. He has won many awards in boxing, both in India and around the world. Akhil is known for his special "open guarded" boxing style.

In 2005, the Indian government honored him with the Arjuna Award. This award is given to people who have achieved great things in sports. Akhil Kumar also worked as a national observer for boxing. He helped the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. He was also a member of important sports committees.

Akhil Kumar is also a police officer. He works as a deputy superintendent of police in the Haryana Police Service.

Akhil Kumar started his international boxing career in 1999. He quickly showed his talent.

Early Wins (1999-2003)

In 1999, Akhil won a gold medal. This was at the 6th YMCA Junior International Boxing Championship. He continued to win in the following years. In 2001, he won another gold medal in Russia. By 2003, he had won a gold medal in the flyweight category. He also earned the "Best Boxer" award three times. Overall, he won twelve gold, one silver, and four bronze medals in these early years.

Olympic Dreams (2004)

Akhil Kumar aimed for the Olympics in 2004. He qualified for the Athens Games by finishing second in a qualifying tournament in China. However, he lost in the first round at the 2004 Olympics.

Commonwealth Success (2005-2006)

In 2005, Akhil won a gold medal. This was at the 4th Commonwealth Federation Boxing Championships in Scotland. He won by a very close score of 18-17.

His biggest win came at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He won the gold medal in the Bantamweight category. He beat Bruno Julie from Mauritius in the final match. Akhil started strong, landing many punches. He kept his lead throughout the fight to win the gold.

Beijing Olympics and World Cup (2008)

Akhil Kumar qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He beat a strong opponent, Worapoj Petchkoom, to get there. At the Olympics, he reached the second round. He then beat the World Champion, Sergey Vodopyanov. The score was tied, but judges gave the win to Akhil. He lost in the quarter-finals to Veaceslav Gojan.

Later in 2008, Akhil competed in the AIBA World Cup in Moscow. He won a bronze medal there. His semifinal match was a tie, but the judges decided in favor of his opponent.

London Olympics (2012)

Akhil Kumar could not compete in the 2012 London Olympics. He had an injury and could not lose enough weight in time. This prevented him from taking part in the qualifying tournament.

Awards and Recognition

Akhil Kumar received the prestigious Arjuna award in 2005. This award is one of India's highest honors for athletes.
