The Akwesasne Indians are a fantastic Junior "B" box lacrosse team. They come from Akwesasne, a unique place where Ontario, Quebec, and New York meet. The Indians play in the exciting OLA Junior B Lacrosse League.
Team History
The Akwesasne team first joined the OJBLL in 1996. Back then, they were known as the Akwesasne Lightning. Other big Iroquois teams, like the Onondaga Warriors, also joined around that time.
Some teams left to play in a different league. But Akwesasne decided to stay in the OLA. This choice helped them become one of the top teams in their league.
The team's home is the Akwesasne Reserve. This reserve is special because it sits right on the border. It's where Canada and the United States meet. Most other teams in the league are from Canadian cities.
After a tough first season in 1996, the Lightning got much better. They had a winning record almost every year until 2007. In 2004, they even won their first division title! They had an amazing record of 17 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties that year.
After the 2008 season, the team took a break for one year. This was because of money problems. But they came back strong in 2010! In 2014, the team changed its name. They became the Akwesasne Indians, which is the name they use today.
Founders Cup Champions
The Founders Cup is a really big deal in Canadian lacrosse. It's the CANADIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS for Junior B teams. The Akwesasne Indians have played in this important tournament.
In 2012, the team had a great run at the Founders Cup. They won all four of their games in the first round. This put them in first place in their group. They then won their semifinal game. But they lost a very close game in the final, finishing as Silver medalists.
Then, in 2015, the Akwesasne Indians did something incredible! They won every single game in the first round. They played six games and won them all! This put them in first place overall. They then went on to win the Gold Medal Game. They beat the Seneca WarChiefs in overtime to become the CHAMPIONS! This was a huge victory for the team and their community.
