Alí Chumacero

Alí Chumacero Lora (born July 9, 1918 – died October 22, 2010) was a famous Mexican poet. He also worked as a translator, a literary critic, and an editor. He was part of the Mexican Academy of Language, which is a group of important writers and scholars.

His Early Life

Alí Chumacero Lora was born on July 9, 1918, in Acaponeta, a town in Nayarit, Mexico. His family later moved to Guadalajara, where he went to school from elementary to high school.

In 1937, he moved to Mexico City. He wanted to study Philosophy and Literature at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He couldn't start right away because he needed to catch up on some high school classes. During this time, he spent his days reading many books and exploring the city.

Starting His Career

In 1940, while still at the university, Alí Chumacero helped start a magazine called Tierra Nueva. He worked on it with friends like Jorge González Durán and Leopoldo Zea. The magazine was published until 1942. They wanted to mix new, exciting writing styles with serious academic studies.

In 1949, Alí Chumacero married Lourdes Gómez Luna. They had five children together.

He passed away in Mexico City in 2010 from pneumonia. He was 92 years old.

His Work as a Writer and Editor

Alí Chumacero received special scholarships in the early 1950s. These helped him study at the Colegio de México and the Mexican Center of Writers. In 1964, he became a member of the Mexican Academy of Language. He also led the Fondo de Cultura Económica, a big publishing house.

He was an editor for many publications. He started with Tierra Nueva magazine from 1940 to 1942. Later, he edited Letras de México, El Hijo Pródigo, and La cultura en México. This last one was a special cultural section in Mexican newspapers like Novedades.

His Books

Alí Chumacero wrote several important books of poetry. Some of his well-known works include:

  • Exiled Images (Imágenes desterradas) (1948)
  • Words in Rest (Palabras en reposo) (1956)
  • The Critical Moments (Los momentos críticos)

Alí Chumacero received many awards for his work:

  • Xavier Villaurrutia Award (1984)
  • Alfonso Reyes International Prize (1986)
  • National Art and Sciences Award (for Linguistics and Literature) (1987)
  • Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor from the Mexican Senate (1996)

In 2008, a special event was held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes to celebrate his 90th birthday. Many of his friends, like Carlos Montemayor and Eduardo Lizalde, attended.

A theater was named after him in 1987. The Ali Chumacero People's Theater is in Tepic, Nayarit. It is the most important cultural place in that state.
