The Senate of the Republic (known in Spanish as Senado de la República) is an important part of Mexico's government. It is the upper house of the country's Congress, which means it's one of two main groups that make laws. Mexico's Congress is bicameral, meaning it has two chambers: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The Senate currently has 128 members, called senators, and they each serve for six years.

What Is the Mexican Senate?
The Senate of the Republic is a key part of how Mexico is governed. Its main job is to create and approve laws that affect everyone in the country. Senators work to represent the different states and people of Mexico. They discuss important issues and make decisions that shape the future of the nation.
How the Senate Works
The Senate works together with the other part of Congress, the Chamber of Deputies. While both groups make laws, the Senate often focuses on specific areas. These include approving treaties with other countries and confirming important government officials. It acts like a check and balance on the other parts of the government.
How Are Senators Chosen?
The Senate has 128 members, and they are chosen in a few different ways. This system makes sure that many different voices and political parties are heard. The way senators are picked has changed over time, especially with reforms in the 1990s.
Electing Senators by State
- Two senators are chosen for each of Mexico's 32 states. These senators are elected based on who gets the most votes in their state. This is called the relative majority principle.
- One senator is also chosen for each of the 32 states based on the first minority principle. This means the senator comes from the political party that got the second-highest number of votes in that state.
National Senators
- Thirty-two senators are chosen from a national list. These senators are divided among the political parties based on how many votes each party received across the whole country. This helps make sure smaller parties also have a voice in the Senate.
