Al-Mundhir (Arabic: المنذر بن محمد بن عبدالرحمن) was a ruler called an Emir of Córdoba. He ruled from 886 to 888. He was part of the Umayyad dynasty in Al-Andalus, which was the name for the Moorish lands in the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal). Al-Mundhir was the son of Muhammad I.
Al-Mundhir's Life and Rule
Al-Mundhir was born in Córdoba around the year 842. While his father was still ruling, Al-Mundhir was a military leader. He led many battles against the Christian kingdoms nearby. He also fought against groups called Muwallads, who were people born in Al-Andalus but had converted to Islam.
In 865, Al-Mundhir led a military trip against King Ordoño I of Asturias. This trip was in the Duero valley. It did not fully succeed. On his way back to Córdoba, he won a battle against Rodrigo, who was a count. This victory helped push the border of Córdoba further north. He also tried to take over León. However, he was defeated there in 878 by King Alfonso III of Asturias.
Al-Mundhir then started a fight against the Banu Qasi family. This family was a group of Muwallads who had joined forces with Alfonso III. Al-Mundhir was defeated again in 883. But the next year, in 884, he was able to force a rebel leader named Ibn Marwan out of Badajoz.
In 886, Al-Mundhir's father passed away. Al-Mundhir then became the new Emir of Córdoba. He ruled for two years. During his time as emir, he kept fighting against a rebel leader named Umar ibn Hafsun. Al-Mundhir died in 888 at a place called Bobastro. His brother, Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Umawi, then became the next ruler.
