Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Al-Udri (full name: Abu al-abbas Ahmad ibn Umar ibn Anas al-Udri), born in 1003 and passing away in 1085, was a very important Arab geographer, traveler, and historian. He lived in a place called al-Andalus, which was a part of Spain ruled by Muslims a long time ago.

Al-Udri came from the Udra tribe, an Arab group that had settled in Almería, a city in al-Andalus.

A Life of Learning and Travel

Al-Udri was born in Almería in the year 1003. When he was still a young boy, he went on a long journey to Mecca, a very important city for Muslims. He stayed there for ten years, studying with a famous teacher named Abu Dhar al-Harawi.

After his studies, Al-Udri returned to al-Andalus. He continued his education, learning from other great scholars like Abu Umar Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and later Ibn Hazm. He eventually settled in Zaragoza.

Al-Udri was a talented writer. He created a special book that combined geography and history about the Taifa of Zaragoza region in al-Andalus. In this book, he wrote down the important events and stories of the area.

He also wrote family histories for groups like the Banu Qasi, Banu Sabrit, and Banu Tujib. Sadly, these books are now lost, but other historians like al-Maqqari mentioned them.

Al-Udri is most famous for his book called Tarsi al-akhbar. This book tells the story of the civil wars and rebellions that happened in the Upper March area and the conflicts in the Taifa of Almería. It gives us a great look into the history of that time.
