Life
Margarita Vladimirovna Rokotova was born in Kyiv in 1872. She first trained to be an artist. But in 1889, she decided to become a writer instead.
A poet named Yakov Polonsky gave her early advice. She soon chose a pen name that sounded like a boy's name: Al Altaev. This name came from one of Polonsky's short stories.
Her writing career started well. However, her husband tried to stop her writing. He even burned some of her stories meant for magazines. Margarita was very determined. She left her husband and took their daughter with her.
For six years, she supported herself by copying documents. She had to visit police stations often because she didn't have proper papers. In 1899, she published a book. It was a biography about the poet Semyon Nadson, who had passed away in 1877.
Later, big changes were happening in Russia. Margarita's apartment in St. Petersburg became a publishing place. It was used for a student newspaper called Young Russia. After the October Revolution, she helped with two newspapers for the Bolshevik group. She worked at the Smolny Institute. Because of this, she met many important leaders, like Lenin.
She was asked to do publicity work in Moscow. She lived at the Metropole Hotel for many years. Over time, her daughter began to help her with her work. Her daughter also used a pen name, Art. Feliche.
