Alfredo Lettieri (born February 24, 1928 – died October 18, 1975) was an American actor. He was active in movies and TV shows during the 1960s and 1970s. He was often chosen to play characters who were villains or tough guys. He became very well-known for his role as the mobster Virgil Sollozzo in the famous crime film The Godfather (1972). He also acted in many other films with big Hollywood stars.

Early Roles

Al Lettieri started his acting career in the late 1950s. One of his first roles was in a 1958 episode of the TV show Perry Mason.

Before he got his big movie roles, Al Lettieri also helped out behind the scenes. He worked as a dialogue coach for several films. This meant he helped actors with their lines and how they spoke them. One movie he helped with was the 1968 war film Where Eagles Dare. Sometimes he was called "Alfredo Lettieri" and sometimes "Al Lettier" in the credits.

Famous Movie Roles

Al Lettieri is most famous for playing Virgil Sollozzo in the 1972 American crime movie The Godfather. In this film, his character was known as "The Turk." This was the second time he worked with the famous actor Marlon Brando. They had also been in a movie together called The Night of the Following Day in 1969.

Lettieri also wrote the story for the 1971 gangster movie Villain. This movie starred actors like Richard Burton. He played tough characters in other action films too. He was Rudy Butler in Steve McQueen's 1972 film, The Getaway. He also played Frank Renda in the 1974 Charles Bronson movie, Mr. Majestyk. His last role was Ciro Musante in Go Gorilla Go (1976).

His Death

Al Lettieri passed away in 1975 in New York City. He was 47 years old when he died from a heart attack.
