Al McAffrey (born June 6, 1948) is an American politician from Oklahoma. He served in the Oklahoma Senate and the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He worked to represent the people of his districts.
Early Life and Career
Al McAffrey grew up in Sulphur, Oklahoma. His father was a Baptist minister. He finished Sulphur High School in 1966.
After college, McAffrey joined the U.S. Navy. He worked as a Navy Corpsman, helping people with medical care. Later, he joined the Oklahoma City Police Department. He also owned and ran several small businesses. Today, he owns OK Cremation & Mortuary Services.
Political Journey
Al McAffrey began his political career in 2006. He won the Democratic primary election. He then became a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives on November 16, 2006. This was a special day, as it was Oklahoma's 100th birthday as a state.
He was re-elected to the House in 2008 and 2010. In 2010, he won with nearly 70% of the votes. During his time in the House, he worked on important committees. These included Public Health and Public Safety. He also served as an assistant minority floor leader.
In 2012, McAffrey ran for a seat in the Oklahoma Senate. He won this special election on February 14, 2012. He took office on February 22, 2012. He served in the Senate until 2015.
McAffrey also ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2014 and 2016. However, he was not successful in those elections.
Helping the Community
Al McAffrey cares about his community. He is a strong supporter of AIDS awareness. He has been a board member for RAIN-Oklahoma. This group helps people affected by AIDS. He also advises the AIDS Walk in Oklahoma City. He is an active member of the Diversity Business Association.
Personal Life
Al McAffrey made history in Oklahoma. He was the first person who openly supported the LGBTQ+ community to be elected to the Oklahoma Legislature. He is a father to three daughters. He also has eight grandchildren.
He lives in Oklahoma City. He is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral. He is also active in his neighborhood association. McAffrey is a voting member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
