Al Washington (born April 22, 1984) is an American football coach. He used to play as a defensive tackle. Currently, he is the defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Before joining Notre Dame, he coached for several other well-known teams. These include the Boston College Eagles, Cincinnati Bearcats, Michigan Wolverines, and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Early Career in Football
Al Washington went to Bishop Watterson High School. This school is located in Columbus, Ohio. In 2001, he was named co-Defensive Player of the Year in Division II. This means he was one of the best defensive players in his league. He also helped his team, the Eagles, reach the state championship game.
After high school, Washington played college football at Boston College. He was a defensive tackle from 2002 to 2005. He was a "three-year starter," meaning he was a main player for three seasons. He was also a "four-year letterwinner," which means he played well enough to earn a special award for four years.

Coaching at Ohio State
On January 7, 2019, Al Washington joined the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was hired to be their new linebackers coach. Linebackers are key defensive players who stop runs and cover passes.
Coaching at Notre Dame
On January 16, 2022, Washington moved to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He took on two important roles there. He became the defensive run game coordinator and the defensive line coach. This means he helps plan how the defense stops opposing teams from running the ball. He also trains the defensive linemen. He replaced Mike Elston in this role.
