Alakbar Mammadov (Azerbaijani: Ələkbər Məmmədov; Russian: Алекпер Мамедов) was a famous football player from Azerbaijan and the Soviet Union. He was born on May 9, 1930, and passed away on July 28, 2014. People remember him best as a powerful striker for FC Dynamo Moscow in the 1950s.

He was also the first manager of the independent Azerbaijan national football team. Alakbar Mammadov was known as a "Master of Sport of the USSR." This was a special title for top athletes in the Soviet Union. He won the Soviet Top League four times as a player. He also played for the Soviet national team.

Mammadov played for and managed his hometown club, Neftçi PFK, for a total of 12 years. He is famous for being the only player to score four goals against the Italian club AC Milan at their home stadium, San Siro.

Playing Career Highlights

Alakbar Mammadov was a true football legend. He scored many important goals during his career. One of his most famous goals happened in 1957. He scored the winning goal for Dynamo Moscow in the 87th minute. This goal helped his team win the Soviet Top League title against Spartak Moscow.

Fifty years later, this amazing goal was remembered. Mammadov received a special award called the Order of Alexander Nevsky (first degree). This award was given at Dynamo's home stadium, Petrovsky Park.

Goals on the International Stage

Mammadov scored 45 goals for Dynamo Moscow in league games. He also scored 11 times in international club matches. These were games against teams from other countries. For example, he scored a goal against A.C. Milan in 1955. This game was played in front of 100,000 fans at San Siro.

He also scored against the Brazilian team Vasco da Gama. This friendly match took place in Moscow in 1956. About 90,000 fans watched that game.

After His Playing Days

After retiring as a player, Mammadov continued to be involved in football. From 1972 to 1990, he was the President of the "Leather Ball" tournament. This was a big youth football tournament across the Soviet Union. Today, it is connected to the Danone Nations Cup, a worldwide youth football competition.

In 1991, Mammadov wrote a book about his experiences. It was called Secrets of the Football Profession.

Managing the National Team

In 1992, Alakbar Mammadov made history again. He became the first head coach of the Azerbaijan national football team. Under his leadership, the team won 3 out of 4 matches. This included their first-ever national team victory. They won against Georgia on May 25, 1993.

To honor his great contributions to Azerbaijani football, a special tournament was created in 2008. This football tournament is played in Mammadov's name in Baku.
