History of the Azerbaijan SSR
The Azerbaijan SSR was created on April 28, 1920. It was a time of big changes in the region.
Joining the Transcaucasian SFSR
From March 12, 1922, to December 5, 1936, Azerbaijan was part of a group called the Transcaucasian SFSR. This group also included the Armenian SSR and the Georgian SSR. Think of it as three neighboring republics working together.
Becoming Part of the Soviet Union
In December 1922, the Transcaucasian SFSR, including Azerbaijan, joined the newly formed Soviet Union. This was a major step for the region.
New Constitution and Name Change
A new set of rules, called the Constitution of Azerbaijan SSR, was approved on March 14, 1937. This document guided how the republic was run.
Later, on November 19, 1990, the Azerbaijan SSR changed its name. It became known as the "Republic of Azerbaijan". Even with the new name, it was still part of the Soviet Union for about another year.
Independence of Azerbaijan
The Soviet Union eventually broke apart. This happened in 1991. When the Soviet Union ended, Azerbaijan became a fully independent country.
