The streets here wind around the hill. You'll see charming cottages and large, beautiful Craftsman style homes. Alameda is located between the Beaumont-Wilshire and Hollywood District neighborhoods. History of Alameda Neighborhood

The Alameda neighborhood started on land claimed by William C. Bowering and his wife, Isabelle, way back in 1859. This area was first known as Gravelly Hill Road. This was because there was a gravel pit near where NE 33rd and Fremont streets are now.

In 1909, a company called the Alameda Land Company planned out the Alameda Park subdivision. This new area then became part of the city of Portland.

What Does "Alameda" Mean?

The name "Alameda" comes from a Spanish word. The Spanish word "alamo" means a poplar or cottonwood tree. So, "Alameda" specifically means a public path or walkway that is lined with poplar trees. It's like the English word "parkway," which means a street lined with trees.

There is also a street called Alameda Street in the neighborhood. This street is even mentioned in a song! The musician Elliott Smith wrote a song called "Alameda." It's on his album called Either/Or.
