Exploring the Hollywood District
The Hollywood District is a lively area with both homes and businesses. It's a popular spot for shopping, especially for people living in nearby neighborhoods like Grant Park and Laurelhurst. People who ride the MAX Light Rail System also come here to shop.
Hollywood in Books and History
Did you know the Hollywood District is featured in books? The famous author Beverly Cleary wrote about this area in her Klickitat Street series. You can find a special display about her at the Hollywood Library. The library even offers a walking tour to see places from her books!
The Hollywood District also has a cool piece of history. The very first pedestrian crossing light in Oregon was put here. It was placed right across the street from the Hollywood Theatre.
How the District Began
This area was originally part of a larger plan called the Rose City Park subdivision. This plan was created in 1907. Before that, the land was part of a special land claim by Joseph Backenstos. Later, in 1866, U.S. President Andrew Johnson officially gave the land to his widow. Maps from the 1890s called this area the Crook Tract.
For many years, a big store chain called Rodgers had its main office here. Their largest store was also in the Hollywood District from 1955 to 1984.
Fun Things to Do in Hollywood
The Hollywood District is home to the Hollywood Farmers Market. This market is open all year round on Saturdays. You can find it on NE Hancock Street between 44th and 45th Avenues. It's open every week from April to November. From December to March, it's open twice a month.
The "Hollywood Boosters" group started a monthly event called "Hollywood at Night." This event began in the summer of 2006. It happens on the third Thursday of every month. It's a great way to bring neighbors and local businesses together.
Learning About Fashion
The Portland Fashion Institute is also located in the Hollywood District. It was started in 2010. This institute teaches students about design, technology, and business in the fashion industry. It's the only accredited fashion design school in Oregon!
