Alan Gilbert Merten (born December 27, 1941 – died May 21, 2020) was an important leader in education. He was the fifth president of George Mason University.
About Alan Merten
Alan Merten was married to Sally Merten. They had two children and four grandsons. He passed away in 2020 in Naples, Florida. He had been battling Parkinson's disease.
His Education Journey
Alan Merten was a very smart student. He earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He then got a master's degree in Computer science from Stanford University. Later, he returned to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to get his PhD in Computer Science.
His Career in Education
Alan Merten started his career as a professor. He taught engineering at the University of Michigan. After that, he became a dean. He led the College of Business Administration at the University of Florida. Then, he became the dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.
In 1996, Alan Merten became the president of George Mason University. He worked there until he retired on June 30, 2012. He was the university's president for 16 years.
