Alan Steven Rudolph (born December 18, 1943) is an American film director and screenwriter. He is known for making movies that often feature unique characters and their relationships.

Growing Up and Starting Out
Alan Rudolph was born in Los Angeles, California. His dad, Oscar Rudolph, was also a director and actor for television. Alan became very interested in making movies.
He learned a lot from famous director Robert Altman. Alan worked as an assistant director on some of Altman's films. These included The Long Goodbye and Nashville. This helped him learn how movies are made.
His Unique Films
Alan Rudolph's movies often focus on characters who are a bit different or feel alone. These characters explore their relationships with others. His films often have a romantic or fantasy feel. He has written most of the movies he directs.
He also likes to work with the same actors and composers. For example, he has often worked with actors Keith Carradine and Geneviève Bujold. He also frequently worked with composer Mark Isham.
Rudolph became well-known for his film Choose Me in 1984. Another movie, Trouble in Mind (1985), was shown at a big film festival in Berlin. It starred Kris Kristofferson, Geneviève Bujold, and Keith Carradine.
In 1988, he made The Moderns. This movie tells a fictional love story set in Paris in 1926. It shows American artists living there, like Ernest Hemingway. The story is about an artist who tries to win back his former wife.
He also directed Mortal Thoughts (1991), which was a thriller. Then came Equinox (1992), about separated twins. In 1994, he directed Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle. This film was about the life of writer Dorothy Parker, with Jennifer Jason Leigh playing her.
Later, he directed Breakfast of Champions in 1999. This movie was based on a famous book by Kurt Vonnegut. It was also shown at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Later Work and Art
Besides directing, Alan Rudolph has also started painting. In 2008, he showed his paintings at a gallery in Washington.
In 2017, he directed Ray Meets Helen. This was a love story about two unique people. It starred Keith Carradine, who has worked with Rudolph many times.
