The Albany Crown Tower, also known as the Crown Building, was a huge building planned for Manchester, England. It was meant to stand near the Rochdale Canal and Piccadilly Station. If it had been built, it would have been one of the tallest buildings in Manchester.

The project was expected to cost about £83 million. A famous architect named Ian Simpson designed it for a company called Albany Crown. Even though permission was given in 2005, building never started. The company faced problems in 2010, and the tower was never built.

What Was the Albany Crown Tower?

The Albany Crown Tower was designed to be a "mixed-use" building. This means it would have had different types of spaces inside. It was planned to be 131 meters (430 feet) tall. The tower would have had 44 floors.

What Was Inside the Tower?

  • The ground floor was planned for shops.
  • Floors 1 to 23 were going to be a hotel.
  • Floors 24 to 41 were designed for homes, with 237 flats in total.
  • The very top two floors would have been a special penthouse apartment.

In 2007, the developers thought about making the tower even taller. They wanted to add 10 more floors, making it 160 meters (525 feet) high. Next to the main tower, there was also a plan for a smaller, 11-storey building. This smaller building would have been 49 meters (160 feet) tall. It was meant for more shops and offices.

Why Was the Tower Not Built?

The idea for the Albany Crown Tower started a long time ago.

Getting Permission to Build

A plan for the tower was first sent in February 2005. The company, Albany Crown, then bought the land in October 2005 for £6 million. The city officially approved the building plans on November 11, 2005.

The Site's History

The land where the tower was supposed to go already had buildings on it. These were five-storey offices built between 1948 and 1951. They were used as a Labour Exchange, which was part of a government department. The plan was to knock down these old offices in early 2006. However, demolition didn't actually start until 2014. Today, a Holiday Inn hotel is being built on that very same spot.

Project Stops

The Albany Crown Tower project stopped because the company, Albany Assets, had trouble selling apartments in other buildings they were working on. In May 2010, Albany Crown faced serious financial problems. This meant they could no longer continue with the tower. The decision to build a hotel on the site instead finally ended any chance of the Albany Crown Tower ever being constructed.
