History of the Church
How it Started
Albany Road Baptist Church started in 1894. It began in a small room above a stable on Cottrell Road. At first, it was a 'Particular Baptist' church. This meant only people who had been baptised by full immersion could take part in communion. Also, people who worked with alcoholic drinks could not be members.
In 1898, the church moved to Albany Road. They built a large school chapel there, which is still used today. They left the corner spot empty. The church wanted to build the main church building later without owing any money. In 1916, the church changed its rules. It became 'open communion', meaning more people could take part.
Building the Church
Building the main church was delayed for a long time. This was because of a lack of money and the First World War. The church was finally finished in 1932. However, the tower was built much smaller than first planned.
In 1971, the school chapel was changed. It became two halls, one upstairs and one downstairs. A coffee bar was also added. In 1994, for the church's 100th birthday, a new glass front and entrance area were added.
Helping Start Other Churches
In the late 1960s, Albany Road Baptist Church helped start another church. This new church was called Christchurch United Church in Llanedeyrn. Albany Road suggested building a new church in this growing area. Other churches could not help, so Albany Road decided to do it alone.
They asked for one of the building sites set aside for churches. Several members from Albany Road left to join the new church. They started meeting in a school hall in 1967. Then, they moved to a new hall in 1969. The main church building for Christchurch United was completed in 1977.
