Albany adder facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Albany adder is a very small and highly venomous snake that lives in South Africa. It's a type of viper and is usually less than a foot (30 cm) long. This snake is super rare and is the most endangered snake in South Africa. It has a special brown and red pattern on its scales. It even looks like it has tiny horns above its eyes! Albany adders become adults and can have babies when they are about 3 to 4 years old. In the wild, they can live for around 15 years.

Discovering the Albany Adder

Scientists first discovered the Albany adder in the 1990s. Since then, only about a dozen of these snakes have ever been found. Sadly, one of them was already dead when it was discovered. The last time an Albany adder was seen and officially recorded was in 2007.

A Race Against Time

In 2014, the Albany adder was added to the Critically endangered species list. This means it was in extreme danger of disappearing forever. It was almost declared extinct because no one had seen or recorded it for nearly ten years. If a species isn't found for a decade, it can be officially called extinct. Luckily, a group of reptile experts went searching and found two more of these rare snakes, just in time!

Where They Live and What They Do

Scientists are keeping the exact locations of the Albany adder a secret. This helps protect the snakes from harm. New rules are also in place to protect their homes. These adders live among small plants and tiny trees.

Mysterious Habits

Scientists don't know much about the Albany adder's daily life. They are still learning what these snakes eat, how they have babies, and how they behave.

However, scientists do know a lot about other types of Adders. They believe the Albany adder probably has similar habits. Other adders eat small Mammals, small Reptiles, nesting Birds, and Amphibians. Scientists think female Albany adders might have around 10 to 12 babies at a time. These young snakes likely go off on their own soon after they are born.
