Albert André (born May 24, 1869 – died July 11, 1954) was a French painter. He was known for his beautiful paintings of people and scenes. He was a Post-Impressionist artist, which means his art style came after Impressionism. He painted famous artists like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who was his very good friend, and Claude Monet.
Who Was Albert André?
Albert André was born in Lyon, France. When he was young, he learned to design patterns for silk. In 1889, he moved to Paris. There, he joined the Académie Julian, which was a famous art school.
At the art school, he met other artists like Paul Ranson and Louis Valtat. He also became friends with a group of artists called Les Nabis. This group included well-known painters such as Pierre Bonnard and Félix Vallotton.
His Art and Friendships
In 1894, Albert André showed five of his paintings at an art show called the Salon des Indépendants. There, the famous painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir saw his work. Even though Renoir was much older, they became very close friends. Renoir helped André a lot with his art career.
Through Renoir's art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, André was able to sell many of his paintings. His art was shown in the United States at the Durand-Ruel Galleries. Between 1895 and 1901, he showed his art at many important exhibitions in Paris. In 1912, his paintings were shown in New York City.
Life in Southern France
After serving in World War I, Albert André moved to Marseille. Later, he settled in a village called Laudun in the south of France. His family owned a house and a small vineyard there, and he had spent many vacations there as a child.
He became the curator of the art museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze. He worked there until he passed away. In 1919, he wrote a book about his friend Renoir. People say it is one of the best books about Renoir's art. In 1921, he also helped organize a big show of Renoir's paintings.
Albert André was also very close friends with an art critic named George Besson. In 1971, Besson gave his amazing art collection to France. Some of these artworks went to the museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, which is now called the Musée Albert-André.
His Legacy
Albert André passed away on July 11, 1954, when he was 85 years old. After he died, a special show of his paintings was held in Paris in 1955.
Today, you can find many of his beautiful paintings in famous museums around the world. These include the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. His art is also displayed at the Musée Albert-André in France.
