James Albert "Darky" Banks (born December 10, 1883 – died July 5, 1930) was a talented Australian sportsman. He played both cricket and Australian rules football. He played two important cricket matches for Western Australia.
Banks' Family Story
James Albert Banks was born in Maryborough, Victoria on December 10, 1883. His father, Jordan Henry Banks, had an amazing life story. He was once an American slave. Jordan was very strong and tall, about 6 feet 3 inches! He was so strong that the cabins where runaway slaves were kept could not hold him. He managed to escape to freedom by going through Canada. After gaining his freedom, he came to Australia and settled in Maryborough. All his children, including James, were born there.
James also had a brother named Thomas Banks. Thomas was also a great athlete. He played Australian rules football for the Fitzroy team. This team was part of the Victorian Football League.
Banks' Football Career
James Albert Banks was a skilled Australian rules footballer. He played many games in the West Australian Football League. He played 148 games for the South Fremantle team. He also played 39 games for the Perth team. James was even the captain for South Fremantle in 1909, 1912, and 1914.
Later Life
James Albert Banks passed away in Perth on July 5, 1930.
