Albert Edward Dunn was a British politician from the Liberal Party. He was born on February 13, 1864, and passed away on May 2, 1937. Early Life and Work
Albert Edward Dunn was the oldest son of William Henry Dunn. He went to school at Hallam Hall College in Clevedon, England. He never married.
Becoming a Lawyer
In 1887, Albert Edward Dunn became a solicitor. A solicitor is a type of lawyer who gives legal advice and prepares legal documents. In 1892, he helped start a law firm called Dunn & Baker in Exeter. Later, he worked for another law firm in London. He eventually stopped working as a lawyer to focus completely on his political career.
War Service
When World War I began in 1914, he joined the Royal Fusiliers, a British Army regiment. He was given the job of finding and signing up new soldiers from Exeter and the surrounding areas.
Political Journey
Albert Edward Dunn started his political career in local government. In 1888, he was first elected to the Exeter City Council. He tried to become a Member of Parliament for the first time in 1892, representing the Exeter area. However, he did not win that election.
Local Leadership
Like his father, he became a Justice of the peace in Exeter. A Justice of the Peace is a volunteer who helps with local legal matters. He stayed active in Exeter's local politics. He served as the Mayor of Exeter twice, first from 1900 to 1901, and then again from 1901 to 1902. In 1905, he also worked as the Honorary Town clerk of Exeter.
Becoming an MP
Albert Edward Dunn returned to national politics for the 1906 general election. He was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Camborne, a mining area in Cornwall. He won this seat for the Liberal Party with a much larger number of votes than his opponents.
He was elected again in January 1910. Even though the Liberal Party lost some support across the country, he managed to increase his lead in Camborne. He then decided not to run for election in December 1910.
Changing Parties
In the December 1918 general election, Albert Edward Dunn ran for Parliament again. This time, he stood in the nearby area of St Ives. He did not run as a Liberal Party candidate, but as a candidate for the Labour Party. However, he lost this election to the Liberal candidate.
He did not run in the 1922 general election. But he tried again in St Ives in the 1923 general election. In that election, he finished in third place.
