About Alberto De Martino

Early Life and Career

Alberto De Martino was born on June 12, 1929, in Rome. His father was a film make-up artist, so Alberto grew up around movies. He even started his career as a child actor!

Later, De Martino studied law at university. But he soon returned to the world of cinema. He worked as an editor, a screenwriter, and an assistant director. A famous director named Federico Fellini encouraged him to become a director himself. De Martino also worked a lot as a "dubbing director." This meant he was in charge of making sure foreign films had good Italian voices, helping over 1,500 movies sound great for Italian audiences.

His Unique Film Style

De Martino was a very active director in Italian cinema from the 1960s to the mid-1980s. He made movies in many different styles, or "genres." These included Spaghetti Westerns (Westerns made in Italy), poliziotteschi (Italian crime films), Peplum films (movies about ancient heroes), and horror films.

He was good friends with the famous director Sergio Leone. De Martino even worked as a second unit director on Leone's film Duck, You Sucker! Sometimes, De Martino used a different name for his work, "Martin Herbert."

Later Career and Legacy

In 1980, De Martino faced a challenge when his film The Pumaman didn't do well at the box office. This meant it didn't earn much money. He made a few more films after that, ending his career with Miami Golem.

Alberto De Martino passed away in Rome on June 2, 2015, at the age of 85. He left behind a legacy of many exciting and diverse films that entertained audiences around the world.
