Alberto Górriz Echarte, born on February 16, 1958, is a Spanish former professional footballer. He mostly played as a central defender. He was very good at heading the ball. He often scored goals from set pieces, like free kicks or corners.
Alberto Górriz played his whole career for Real Sociedad. He played almost 600 official games for them. He helped his team win four big titles. He also played for the Spanish national team in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Playing for Real Sociedad
Alberto Górriz was born in Irun, Gipuzkoa, a part of the Basque Country in Spain. He joined the youth team of Real Sociedad. He played only for this club during his professional career.
He made his first team debut on April 8, 1979. This was in a game against Rayo Vallecano, which Real Sociedad won 4–0. From his third season, in 1980–81, he became a very important defender. That season, Real Sociedad won the La Liga title, which is the top football league in Spain.
Górriz played at least 31 games each season until 1991–92. He often played alongside Agustín Gajate, another defender who also played for only one professional club.
Alberto Górriz retired from football in June 1993. He had played 461 matches in La Liga. In total, he played 599 official games for Real Sociedad. This is still a club record! His last year playing was also the last year for the old Atotxa Stadium, Real Sociedad's home ground.
Playing for Spain
Alberto Górriz played 12 games for the Spanish national team. He played for Spain for a little less than two years. He made his first appearance on November 16, 1988. He was 30 years old at the time.
His first game was an important qualifier for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Spain won 2–0 against the Republic of Ireland in Seville.
Górriz was chosen to play in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. He scored his only goal for Spain during this tournament. It was in a group stage game against Belgium. Spain won 2–1. Górriz scored with a header from a free kick taken by Míchel.
