Alberto I della Scala was an important leader from the Scaliger family. He ruled the city of Verona from 1277 until he passed away on September 3, 1301.
Who Was Alberto I della Scala?
Alberto was the son of Jacopino della Scala. Before becoming the ruler of Verona, he served as a podestà (a kind of chief magistrate or mayor) in the city of Mantua. He held this position in both 1272 and 1275.
Becoming Lord of Verona
In 1277, Alberto took over the leadership of Verona. This happened after his brother, Mastino, who was the previous ruler, died. Alberto then became the new Lord of Verona.
Alberto's Family and Legacy
Alberto I della Scala died in Verona in 1301. After his death, his son, Bartolomeo, became the next ruler of Verona. Alberto had other sons who also became important leaders later on. His sons Alboino and Francesco (who was also known as Cangrande) also ruled Verona in 1304 and 1312, respectively. Alberto's daughter, Costanza, married Obizzo II d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara.
