Becoming a Film Director
Alberto Lattuada was born in a town called Vaprio d'Adda, in Italy. His father, Felice Lattuada, was a composer, which means he wrote music.
Even though his father wanted him to study architecture, Alberto was always very interested in books and art. When he was a student, he worked for a magazine called Camminare... and was part of an artists' group.
Starting in Movies
Alberto began his journey in the film world by writing movie scripts and helping other directors. His first job was assisting Mario Soldati on a film called Piccolo mondo antico in 1940.
He directed his very first movie, Giacomo l'idealista, in 1943. This was the start of a long and successful career.
Working with Other Directors
One of his most well-known films is Luci del Varietà (which means "Variety Lights"), made in 1950. He co-directed this movie with another famous Italian director, Federico Fellini. This was actually Fellini's first time directing a film!
Alberto Lattuada's movie La steppa was shown at the 12th Berlin International Film Festival in 1962. He was also a judge at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival in 1970, helping to choose the best films.
Some of his other important films include Il bandito (1946), Anna (1951), and Mafioso (1962). He made many different types of movies, from dramas to comedies.
Later Life
Alberto Lattuada was married to an actress named Carla Del Poggio. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 90. He is buried in his family's special burial place in the cemetery of Morimondo.
