He has received several special awards for his achievements. In 2011, he won an award for his human values from the Asturian Sports Press Association. The next year, in 2012, he was named the best male athlete by the same association. In 2013, he received the gold Real Orden al Mérito Deportivo, which is a very high honor in Spanish sports.

Alberto's Running Career

Alberto is a T12 runner, which means he is a visually impaired athlete. He often competes against runners who do not have disabilities. He is a member of the Laso Oviedo Athletics Club. His coach is Chus Castaño. Alberto holds the world record for the marathon in his classification.

Early Competitions

In 2011, Alberto took part in the Gran Fondo Siete Aguas International Trophy. He also competed in the Spanish Paralympic national athletics championships held in Gijón. Later that year, he went to the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. He was one of two Spanish athletes competing in the marathon there. Alberto won a gold medal in the marathon, setting a new world record time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, and 10 seconds. He also earned a bronze medal in the men's T12 10,000 meter race.

Road to the Paralympics

As the 2012 athletics season began, Alberto's main goal was to win a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. He received support from the Plan ADO, which helps Spanish athletes prepare for the Paralympic Games. Before the London Games, he trained with other visually impaired Spanish athletes in Logroño. In May 2012, he was considered one of the top athletes from Asturias likely to compete in London.

In June 2012, Alberto competed in the European Championships. He finished first in the T12 5,000 meters race with a time of 15 minutes, 23.60 seconds.

Paralympic Success

Alberto competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. He won a gold medal in the men's T12 marathon. This was Spain's eighth gold medal at those Games. He completed the marathon in an amazing time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 50 seconds. This was a new Paralympic Games record and a new world record! He also finished sixth in the men's T12 5,000 meter event.

In 2013, Alberto ran in the Barcelona half marathon. He finished 6th, setting a personal best time for that distance. He also competed in the Divina Pastora 8 km Orotava race in the Canary Islands. Before this race, he gave a talk about physical activity, sports, and healthy eating for athletes. In July 2013, he participated in the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships.
