Albinus: A Helper of History
Albinus was the abbot of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury. He played a key role in helping the famous historian Bede write his important book, Historia Ecclesiastica. Most of what we know about Albinus comes from a special letter Bede wrote at the beginning of his book.
His Teachers and Learning
Albinus was a student of two very wise men. One was Archbishop Theodore, and the other was his helper, Adrian of Canterbury. Adrian was also an abbot at St. Peter's. Because of Adrian's teaching, Albinus became very good at understanding the Bible. He also became a master of both ancient Greek and Latin languages.
Becoming an Abbot
When Adrian, Albinus's teacher and friend, passed away, Albinus took his place. He became the new abbot of St Augustine's Abbey. This was a special moment because Albinus was the first native Englishman to hold that important position.
How He Helped Bede
Bede wrote in his letter that Albinus gave him all the facts for his history book. This information was about the church in the Kingdom of Kent. It covered the time from when the English first became Christian up to Bede's own time.
Getting the Information
To get all these facts, Albinus asked a priest named Nothelm for help. Nothelm went on a journey all the way to Rome. There, he searched through old records and archives to find important historical details. Nothelm then shared this information with Bede. It seems that Bede and Albinus never actually met in person. Nothelm was the person who carried messages and information between them.
His Death
Albinus passed away in the year 732. He was buried next to his beloved teacher and friend, Adrian.
