Alcanó is a small village located in the province of Lleida. It is part of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain.

A Look Back: Alcanó's History

The first time Alcanó was mentioned in writing was in a document from 1203. This document talked about a palace that a bishop named Gombau of Camporrells bought. He traded it for the rights to the Alcanó Almunia. An Almunia was a type of farm or estate from the time of the Saracens.

In documents from 1267, the village was called Alcanó de la Frontera. This means "Alcanó of the Border." The castle in Alcanó was owned by different people over time. These owners included Hug de Tolosa and later Pere de Sanahuja. In 1450, the castle became property of the church in Lleida.

Symbols of Alcanó

The official design of Alcanó's coat of arms was approved on August 17, 1993. It is described as a "Losanjado Shield." This means it's a diamond-shaped shield. The shield is green, and it has a golden cannon on it. Above the shield, there is a special crown. This crown looks like a wall and is called a "mural crown of the people."

The cannon on the shield is a traditional symbol. It represents the name of the town, Alcanó.

Life and Culture in Alcanó

Near the main square, called Plaza Mayor, there is an old building. This building used to be the town's ancient castle. The castle has been updated over the years. However, you can still see some of its original parts. These include an arched window and some of the old interior walls.

The main church in Alcanó is named after Saint Peter. It was built in the 1700s in the Baroque style. The church has a very large dome. Its bell tower, where the bells are kept, has eight sides at the bottom. Sadly, in 1936, two beautiful old altarpieces from the 1700s were destroyed.

Alcanó celebrates its main town festival in August. This is a time for fun and community gatherings.

Alcanó's Economy

The main way people in Alcanó make a living is through farming. Most of this farming is "rainfed." This means the crops rely only on rainfall to grow, not on extra water from irrigation systems.

The main crops grown in Alcanó include cereals, almonds, and olives.
