History of Aldbar Castle
Early Owners and Builders
The land where Aldbar Castle stood belonged to the Crammond family for a long time, starting in the 1200s. In 1575, they sold it to John Lyon, 8th Lord Glamis.
John Lyon's son, Sir Thomas Lyon, was an important person. He worked as the Treasurer of Scotland from 1585 to 1595. This meant he managed the country's money. Sir Thomas Lyon built Aldbar Castle in the late 1500s. After his time, the castle was owned by the Sinclair family, and then by the Young family.
Later Changes and Art
In the 1700s, the Chalmers family took ownership of the estate. A famous artist named Clarkson Stanfield painted the castle in 1801.
Later, Patrick Chalmers (1777–1826) made the castle bigger in 1810. His son, also named Patrick Chalmers, added more parts to the castle between 1844 and 1854. These additions were in a style called Baronial-style. This style often includes towers, turrets, and other features that make buildings look like old Scottish castles.
Ancient Discovery
An old stone slab, used for a grave, was found at the castle. It dates all the way back to the 1200s! This important piece of history is now kept at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
