Where Did the Young Name Come From?
The name Young usually describes someone who was "young." It might have been used to tell a father and son apart if they had the same name. In Scotland, it's like the name Younger. This was often used for the person who would inherit an important title or land.
The first records of the Young name in Scotland are from 1271. Malmor and Ade Young were noted in Dumbarton. Later, in 1342, John Young of Dingwall was a witness to an important document. This document was given by the Earl of Ross to the son of the Lord of the Isles.
Important Youngs Through the Centuries
In 1439, Alexander Young worked as a chaplain in Aberdeen. A very important Young was Peter Young. In 1569, he became a teacher for the young James VI of Scotland. Peter was recommended by the Regent Moray, who was ruling for the king.
Peter Young was knighted in 1605. He had a big family. Many of his children received support from the king and queen. One of his sons, also named Peter, was part of a group sent to Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in 1628.
Sir Peter Young's oldest son, Sir James Young, was given a lot of land in Ireland. Because of this, the Young name became very common in counties like Antrim and Tyrone. The Young family also married into many other important families. In 1670, they sold their original family land and bought new land called Auldbar. This land was later sold again in 1743.
Famous People from Clan Young
Peter Young (who passed away in 1988) was a famous military historian. This means he studied the history of wars and armies. He won the Military Cross three times for his bravery. For a time, he commanded a special army unit in Jordan.
In 1968, this Peter Young started the Sealed Knot Society. This group is dedicated to learning about the English Civil War and the Scottish Wars of the Covenant. They often act out historical battles. This Peter Young was a descendant of the Youngs from Auldbar.
