Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans (born September 9, 1843 – died January 20, 1917) was a famous Spanish painter. He is known for his beautiful religious and historical paintings.
Life of a Painter
Alejandro Ferrant was born in Madrid, the capital city of Spain. He began his art studies with his uncle, Luis Ferrant Llausàs, who was also a painter. He also studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a very important art school.
Later, Alejandro received a special scholarship to study in Rome, Italy. He was one of the first students at the "Academia Española de Bellas Artes en Roma." This was a new Spanish art school in Rome. He studied there with other talented artists like Francisco Pradilla and Jaime Morera.
When he returned to Spain, Alejandro Ferrant became the director of the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. This museum later joined with the famous Museo del Prado in 1971. His son, Ángel Ferrant, also became a well-known artist, famous for his sculptures.
His Artworks
Alejandro Ferrant mostly painted religious scenes and historical events. But he also created "genre paintings," which show everyday life. He also worked on decorative art, which means art used to decorate buildings.
Some of his most famous paintings include:
- The Last Communion of San Fernando.
- Sibyls and prophets, which are large paintings inside the dome of San Francisco el Grande church in Madrid.
- The Burial of Saint Sebastian.
- Cisneros, founder of Illescas hospital. This painting was very successful. It won the top award, a first medal, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1892.
