A Look Back: History of the Hall
Building a Landmark
The Aleksandar Nikolić Hall was built in 1973. Architects Ljiljana and Dragoljub Bakić designed it very quickly. Their design was so good that they won a special award called the "Grand Prix of the Belgrade Architecture Salon." The building is known for its cool, modern look and how it uses natural light.
Big Sports Events
This hall has hosted many important sports competitions over the years.
- In 1975, it hosted the final games of EuroBasket 1975, a big European basketball tournament.
- The final game of the EuroLeague's 1976–77 season was also played here. In that game, Maccabi Tel Aviv won against Pallacanestro Varese.
- In 1989, the 16th World Judo Championships took place in the hall.
- It also hosted some early games for EuroBasket 2005 and the 2013 World Women's Handball Championship.
Renaming and Renovations
On February 23, 2016, the hall officially changed its name. It went from Pionir Hall to Aleksandar Nikolić Hall. This was to honor the legendary basketball coach, Aleksandar Nikolić.
In April 2017, the hall hosted a big tennis event. It was the Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinal between Serbia and Spain. Serbia won the match and moved on to the semifinals!
The hall got a major upgrade in 2019. This renovation cost about €2 million euros. They added new seats, a new wooden court, and modern screens. The lighting, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems were also improved. These changes made the hall even better and increased its seating capacity.
Recent International Games
In October 2023, the Israeli basketball team Maccabi Tel Aviv started playing their international home games at Aleksandar Nikolić Hall. This decision was made due to security concerns at their usual home arena.
