Helping Study Aleut Culture

In 1909 and 1910, Aleksey Yachmenev worked with a scientist named Waldemar Jochelson. Jochelson was doing "ethnological studies." This means he was studying the culture, traditions, and history of the Aleut people. Yachmenev, along with another Aleut named Leontiy Sivtsov, helped Jochelson learn about their community. Their help was very important for recording the unique customs and stories of the Aleut people.

A Family Legacy: Preserving Language

Aleksey Yachmenev's son, John Yatchmeneff, continued his family's dedication to preserving Aleut heritage. John Yatchmeneff worked with John P. Harrington, another researcher. In 1941, John Yatchmeneff wrote down many texts for Harrington's work on the Aleut language. This effort was crucial for documenting and saving the Aleut language, which is spoken by the Aleut people.
