Sandro Mazzinghi's Boxing Journey
Sandro Mazzinghi started his boxing career in 1961. That same year, he won the Military World Championships. He then became a professional boxer, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Guido.
Sandro became a European and World Champion. He had an amazing record of 64 wins, 3 losses, and 2 fights with no result. He won 42 of his fights by knockout. Eight of his matches were for the World title, and five were for the European title.
Becoming a World Champion
On September 7, 1963, Sandro won his first world light middleweight title. He beat American boxer Ralph Dupas in Milan, Italy. Sandro won by a technical knockout in the ninth round.
Later that year, they had a rematch in Sydney, Australia. Sandro Mazzinghi won again by knockout. He kept his world champion title until 1965.
Facing Challenges and Coming Back
In 1965, Sandro had a serious accident. He was in a critical condition for several days. This accident affected his boxing career for years to come.
Even after the accident, Sandro returned to the ring. He defended his title in Genoa, Italy, against Tony Montano. He won that fight by knockout in the 12th round. He also won against Fortunato Manca in Rome, after a 15-round decision.
On June 18, 1965, Sandro Mazzinghi fought Nino Benvenuti. He lost his world title in that fight by knockout in the sixth round. In their next fight, Sandro almost lost early on. But he fought hard and gave Benvenuti a tough match. Benvenuti won by decision.
Regaining Titles
Sandro didn't give up. He started winning again and earned the European Superwelter crown. He won this title in Rome, Italy, on June 17, 1966, by defeating Yoland Leveque. He successfully defended this title four times.
On May 26, 1968, Mazzinghi fought Korean boxer Ki-Soo Kim. He won the fight at "San Siro" Stadium in Milan, Italy. This victory meant he was once again the world light middleweight champion!
A few months later, on October 25, he fought American Freddie Little. The referee first said Sandro was disqualified. But this decision was later changed to "no contest." After this, the Italian Boxing Federation took away his title.
Sandro Mazzinghi stopped boxing in 1970 for seven years. He made a brief comeback from 1977 to 1978 before retiring for good in 1978.
