Alexander John Gregory (born 11 March 1984) is a famous British rower. He used to compete for Great Britain. Alex is known for winning many big races. He has won six world championships. He also won two Olympic gold medals. These wins were at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics. He won both in an event called the Coxless four.

Learning and Early Life

Alex Gregory grew up in England. He went to school in Cheltenham and Ashton under Hill. Later, he attended Prince Henry's High School in Evesham. After high school, he went to the University of Reading. He finished his studies there in 2006.

Alex's Rowing Journey

Alex started rowing for Great Britain in 2004. This was at the World Under-23 Championships. He finished 11th in the quad boat. The next year, he was 4th in the double boat. In 2006, he was 8th in the single boat. After university, he became a full member of the men's rowing team. He was also the Captain of the Leander Club. This is a very old and famous rowing club.

Olympic Dreams and First Wins

Alex was chosen as a reserve for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He almost made the main team that year. In 2009, he joined a new team for the "four" boat. This team won two gold medals and one bronze medal. They became the overall champions for 2009. Alex was the newest member of this boat. He rowed with three experienced Olympians. These rowers had all won medals in Beijing.

World Championship Success

At the 2009 World Rowing Championships, Alex's team faced Australia. Australia had won silver at the Olympics. But Alex's team won the gold medal. They were almost two seconds faster than Australia. Slovenia came in third place.

In 2011, Alex won another gold medal. This was at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. He was in the men's four boat. His teammates were Matt Langridge, Richard Egington, and Tom James. They beat Greece and Australia.

Olympic Gold Medals

In 2012, Alex and his teammate Alex Partridge came second. This was at the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials. For the 2012 Olympic season, Alex was chosen for the team. He joined Pete Reed, Tom James, and Andrew Triggs Hodge. This team had won gold in Beijing. They went on to win the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games. They won in the Coxless four event. This race took place at Eton Dorney.

Alex continued his success after the London Olympics. At the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju, he won a gold medal. This time, he was part of the "eight" boat. The next year, he won another gold medal. This was at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. He was back in the coxless four boat. His teammates were Moe Sbihi, George Nash, and Andrew Triggs Hodge.

In 2015, Alex was part of the British team again. They won the most medals at the 2015 World Rowing Championships. This event was in France. Alex won a gold medal in the "eight" boat. His teammates included Matt Gotrel, Constantine Louloudis, Pete Reed, Paul Bennett, Moe Sbihi, George Nash, Will Satch, and Phelan Hill.

Awards and Recognition

Alex Gregory has received special honors for his achievements. In August 2012, post boxes in his hometown of Cheltenham were painted gold. This was to celebrate his gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

He was also given an award called the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This happened in 2013. It was for his great service to rowing. In November 2015, Alex was named "Olympic Athlete of the Year." This award came from the GB Rowing Teams.
