Alexander Cunningham (died September 3, 1660) was a Scottish priest who lived in Ireland during the 1600s. He was an important leader in the Anglican Church there.
Who Was Alexander Cunningham?
Alexander Cunningham was born in Scotland. He later moved to Ireland and became a priest. He held several important jobs, or "livings," as a priest in places like Inver and Killymard.
From 1630 until his death in 1660, he served as the Dean of Raphoe. This meant he was a senior leader in the church in the Raphoe area of Ireland.
His Family
Alexander Cunningham married Marion Murray. She was the daughter of John Murray from Broughton, Edinburgh. They had a very large family. Some stories say they had as many as twenty-seven children! However, many of them died when they were young. Nine of their children grew up to be adults.
Some of their notable children included:
- General Sir Albert Cunningham (later generations spelled the family name Conyngham).
- Alexander.
- Margaret, who married Reverend Alexander Montgomery. He was a church official called a Prebendary in Doe, County Donegal. They were the grandparents of Colonel Alexander Montgomery.
- Catherine, who married John Leslie, who was the Bishop of Clogher. They also had several children.
