A Life in the Military
Growing Up
Alexander Hamilton-Gordon was one of ten children. His father was also named Sir Alexander Hamilton-Gordon, who was a respected military officer. His grandfather, George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, was even a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 to 1855. His other grandfather was John Herschel, a famous scientist.
Starting His Army Career
Alexander went to Winchester College for his education. In 1880, he officially joined the Royal Artillery as an officer. His first time serving in a war was during the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1880.
Later, he fought in the Second Boer War. He took part in important battles like the Siege of Ladysmith and the Battle of Spion Kop. In 1901, he worked in South Africa helping with military intelligence. When he returned to the United Kingdom, he taught at the School of Gunnery. He also took on a role at Aldershot Garrison helping with army supplies and movements.
Leading Troops in War
In 1910, Alexander Hamilton-Gordon moved to India to work as the Director of Military Operations. He stayed there until 1914. After that, he became the main commander for Aldershot Command back in the UK.
In 1916, he was given command of IX Corps. This group of soldiers fought in major battles during World War I, including the Battle of Messines and the Third Battle of the Aisne. He finished his command in 1918 and officially retired from the army in 1920.
He passed away in 1939 at the age of 79.

In 1888, Alexander Hamilton-Gordon married Isabel Newmarch. They had three children together.
