The Alexander Hamilton House
A Home with History
The Alexander Hamilton House was built around 1816. A person named John Bittinger built it. It is a two-story brick house. It has 16 rooms and two chimneys. The house was built in the Georgian style. This style was popular a long time ago.
Alexander Hamilton bought the house in 1842. He was a local land speculator and wagon maker. This means he bought and sold land. He also built wagons. The house stayed in his family for about 100 years.
From House to Library
The last family member to live there was Jane Stover Yost. She was Alexander Hamilton's granddaughter. When she passed away in 1943, she left the house to the town of Waynesboro. She wanted it to become the town's first public library. This is how the house became the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library.
In 1987, a new part was added to the library. To make space for it, another old house next door was taken down.
What You Can See Today
The back yard of the library still has some cool old things. There is a summer kitchen from when the Hamilton family lived there. A summer kitchen was used for cooking in hot weather. You can also see some old grinding stones. These stones were used in a gristmill to grind grain.
Visitors can also enjoy the brick courtyard. There are beautiful flower gardens too. It's a nice place to visit and learn about history.
