Early Life and Titles

Alexander Home was born on November 11, 1769. His parents were the Reverend Alexander Home, 9th Earl of Home, and Abigail Brown Ramey. When his father passed away on October 8, 1786, Alexander inherited his father's titles and family lands.

He was known as Lord Dunglass from 1781 until 1786. In 1814, his name was officially changed to Alexander Ramey-Home. This change was made by a special Royal Licence.

Family Life

On November 6, 1798, Alexander Ramey-Home married Lady Elizabeth Scott. Her father was Henry Scott, the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. Her mother was Lady Elizabeth Montagu.

Alexander and Elizabeth had three sons:

  • Cospatrick Alexander Home, 11th Earl of Home (born October 27, 1799, died July 4, 1881)
  • The Hon. William Montagu Ramey-Home (born November 22, 1800, died July 22, 1822)
  • The Hon. Henry Campbell Home (born 1801, died as a baby)

A Friend to Dogs

Lord Home had a special interest in dogs. In the 1830s, he helped bring a new type of dog to Britain. These dogs were from Newfoundland and were excellent at retrieving things.

He worked with his nephews, the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Lord John Scott. They imported these dogs, which later became known as Labrador Retrievers. Many people believe that Lord Home's dogs are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. These dogs were first used for hunting, helping to fetch game for hunters.
