Alexander Johnson was an important Irish mathematician and teacher. He lived from 1830 to 1912. He is remembered for his work in education and science in Canada.

Early Life and Education

Alexander Johnson was born in Ireland on August 1, 1830. He went to Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) for his education. He was a very bright student.

In 1852, he became a "Scholar" at the college. This meant he was one of the best students. In 1855, he earned his first degree in mathematics. He even won a special Gold Medal for his excellent work!

Later, TCD gave him two more advanced degrees. He received his M.A. (Master of Arts) in 1858. Then, he earned an LL.D. (Doctor of Laws) in 1861.

Moving to Canada

In 1857, Alexander Johnson moved from Ireland to Canada. He started a new chapter in his life there. He became a professor at McGill University in Montreal.

At McGill, he taught mathematics and natural philosophy. Natural philosophy was an old name for science. It included subjects like physics.

Johnson became a very important person at McGill. From 1886 to 1903, he held two big jobs. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was also a Vice-Principal of the university. This meant he helped lead the whole university.

Achievements and Recognition

Alexander Johnson received many honors for his work. In 1882, he got an honorary DCL degree. This was from the University of Bishop's College.

He was also one of the first members of the Royal Society of Canada. This is a group of Canada's top scholars and artists. He was made a Fellow of the Society.

Johnson also led parts of the Royal Society. He was President of Section III. This section focused on Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Later, from 1905 to 1906, he was the President of the entire Royal Society of Canada.

Alexander Johnson passed away on February 11, 1912. He died in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He left behind a legacy of learning and leadership.
