Alexander was made a knight at the special ceremony where King James I was crowned. This happened on May 21, 1424. After this, he played an important role in Scottish history. He was one of the noblemen sent to England as a hostage for King James I. This was a way to guarantee the king's good behavior or payment. Alexander stayed in England from 1424 until November 1427.
