Alexander Lockhart (born 1700, died 17 November 1782) was an important Scottish lawyer in the 1700s. He was also known as Lord Covington. He rose to a high position as a judge, called a Senator of the College of Justice.

Alexander Lockhart's Early Life and Career

Alexander Lockhart was the son of Euphemia Montgomery and George Lockhart of Carnwath. His mother's father was the Earl of Eglinton. The family lived at a place called Craig House in Edinburgh, Scotland. Today, this building is known as Old Craig House.

Alexander studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He became a qualified lawyer, known as an advocate, in 1722. An advocate is a type of lawyer who speaks for people in court.

In 1764, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. This was a very important role. It meant he was the head of the group of all the advocates in Scotland.

Becoming a Judge: Lord Covington

In March 1775, Alexander Lockhart became a judge. This position was called a Senator of the College of Justice. He took this role after another judge, Lord Strichen, passed away.

His special title, "Lord Covington," came from a family estate. This estate was located near a town called Biggar, which is south-west of Edinburgh.

Alexander Lockhart served as a judge until his death. He passed away on 17 November 1782. After his death, John Swinton became the new Senator.

Alexander Lockhart's Family

Alexander Lockhart had a son named Thomas Lockhart (MP).

He also had two daughters. His daughter Rebecca married James (Boyd) Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll. His other daughter, Anne, married Charles Boyd. Charles was the brother of James Hay.

Alexander's sister, Euphemia Lockhart, became the Countess of Wigton. His half-sister, Grace Lockhart, married John Gordon, 3rd Earl of Aboyne. After her first husband died, she married James Stuart, 8th Earl of Moray.

His great-grandsons included William Lockhart and John Gibson Lockhart.
