John Gordon was born in April 1700. He was the son of Charles Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aboyne and Elizabeth Lyon. When his father passed away in April 1702, John became the 3rd Earl of Aboyne. He was only two years old at the time! John Gordon passed away on April 7, 1732, when he was just 32 years old. His oldest son then became the next Earl.

John Gordon married a woman named Grace Lockhart on June 20, 1724. Grace was the daughter of George Lockhart and Lady Euphemia Montgomerie. John and Grace had three children together.
John Gordon's Children
John and Grace's children were:
- Charles Gordon, 4th Earl of Aboyne (born around 1726, died 1794): Charles was their oldest son. When his father John passed away, Charles became the 4th Earl of Aboyne. He continued the family line.
- Lt.-Col. Hon. John Gordon (1728–1778): Their second son, also named John, grew up to be a military officer.
- Lt.-Col. Hon. Lockhart Gordon (1732–1788): Their youngest son, Lockhart, was also a military officer.
These children helped carry on the long history of the Gordon family.
