Sir Alexander Scrymgeour (died 4 August 1306) was a brave Scottish knight. He lived during a very important time in Scottish history. Alexander was a strong supporter of Robert the Bruce, who later became King of Scots. He played a key part in the First War of Scottish Independence, fighting for Scotland's freedom.

Alexander was also the "constable" of Dundee Castle. This meant he was in charge of the castle and its soldiers. He was also the "standard bearer" for Scotland. This was a very important job, as he carried Scotland's main flag into battle. Sadly, he was captured by the English and died in 1306.

A Scottish Hero's Life

Alexander Scrymgeour was the son of Colin Scrimgeour. He became an important figure in Scotland's fight for independence.

Becoming a Leader

In 1298, Alexander was given two very important roles. He was made the constable of Dundee Castle. This job meant he was responsible for the castle's safety and its military forces. At the same time, he became the official standard bearer for Scotland. This meant he carried the national flag during battles and important events. These appointments happened at a Scottish parliament meeting. This meeting was held by William Wallace, another famous Scottish hero.

Fighting for Freedom

Alexander Scrymgeour stood with Robert the Bruce during the Battle of Methven. This battle took place on June 19, 1306. It was a tough fight against the English forces. During the battle, Alexander was captured. Many of Bruce's closest friends and supporters were also taken prisoner. The English forces were led by Aymer de Valence.

A Sad End

The English King, Edward I of England, had ordered that Scottish prisoners be executed quickly. However, Earl Aymer de Valence did not immediately follow these orders for all prisoners. Sadly, Alexander Scrymgeour was later executed. He died on August 4, 1306, by hanging. This happened in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. After his death, his son, Nicholas, took over his family's position.
