Alexander Stewart, Duke of Rothesay was a Scottish prince born on October 16, 1430. He was the first son of King James I of Scotland. Sadly, Alexander died on the same day he was born. He was a twin, and his younger brother later became King James II of Scotland.

Who Was Alexander Stewart?

Alexander Stewart was born at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. His parents were James I of Scotland and Queen Joan Beaufort. He was their fifth child but their first son.

The Duke of Rothesay Title

When Alexander was born, he was given the special title of Duke of Rothesay. This title is very important in Scotland. It is always given to the person who is expected to become the next king or queen of Scotland. This person is called the heir apparent.

A Royal Twin

Alexander was born as the elder of a pair of twins. His younger twin brother was named James. While Alexander lived only for a day, his brother James grew up to become James II of Scotland.
