Alexander Tettey was born in Accra, Ghana. In 1999, he moved to Bodø Municipality in Norway. He later moved to Trondheim Municipality. There, he started playing football for a team called Kolstad.
He joined Rosenborg's youth team. In January 2003, he played his first game for the main team. He was one of the youngest players to join Rosenborg's senior squad.
