Alexey's Early Life and Skiing Journey

Alexey Bugaev was born in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. He was born with a difference in his right hand. He was missing four fingers and the top part of his thumb. His parents wanted to help him feel comfortable and included in society. They took him to a ski resort. This is where Alexey discovered his love for skiing. It became a big part of his life.

Conquering the Slopes: Alexey's Amazing Career

Alexey competes in para-alpine skiing. This sport is for athletes with physical impairments. He is in a group called LW6/8. This means he has an impairment in one arm. He uses two skis and one ski pole to race down the mountains.

First Big Races: World Championships

In 2013, Alexey competed at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. These championships were held in La Molina, Spain. During the slalom event, he bravely finished 5th, even though he broke his arm. Despite his injury, he continued to compete. He won two silver medals in the super combined and giant slalom events. He also showed strong performances in the super-G and downhill races.

Paralympic Glory: Sochi 2014

Alexey was chosen to represent Russia at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. This was a huge moment for him! In his very first event, the standing downhill, he won a silver medal. He was just behind Markus Salcher from Austria. The next day, he earned a bronze medal in the standing super-G. Again, Markus Salcher took the gold.

Alexey then achieved his first Paralympic gold medal. This was in the standing slalom event. He was the fastest after the first run. He extended his lead in the second run. He finished with a combined time of 1 minute 38.97 seconds. This put him 1.27 seconds ahead of Vincent Gauthier-Manuel. He won another gold medal in the super-combined event. He finished the slalom part in 50.30 seconds. He then won the whole event by 1.10 seconds over Matthias Lanzinger. Alexey also won a second silver medal in the giant slalom. This brought his total medals at the Sochi Games to an amazing five!

More Medals: Pyeongchang 2018 and Milano Cortina 2026

Alexey continued his success at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang. He won a gold medal in the super-combined event. He also earned a silver medal in the giant slalom. His incredible journey continued to the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milano Cortina. There, he added another medal to his collection, winning a bronze in the downhill standing event.

World Championship Wins

Alexey had an outstanding performance at the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama. He won an incredible five gold medals! He took home gold in downhill, super combined, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom. This showed his dominance across all alpine skiing disciplines.
