Alexey Ivanovich Sorokin (Russian: Алексе́й Ива́нович Соро́кин) (born March 28, 1922 – died March 4, 2020) was a very important military leader in the Soviet Union. He reached the highest rank in the navy, Fleet Admiral. He also served in the government as a member of the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union.
Alexey grew up in a big family with five children. His father, who was a veteran from the Russian Civil War, passed away in 1933. Alexey joined the Red Army in 1941 during World War II. He started as a soldier who operated a mortar, which is a type of small cannon. He later became a lieutenant and led a group of mortar soldiers. He fought bravely to help free Belarus and also served on the Baltic Front.

A Career in the Military
After World War II ended, Alexey Sorokin continued his service. He became a political officer. This role meant he helped keep up the morale and loyalty of the soldiers.
From 1948 to 1952, Alexey studied at the Lenin Military-Political Academy. This was a special school for military leaders. After he graduated, he joined the Soviet Navy. He worked as a political officer on warships.
Serving on Destroyers and Cruisers
He served on destroyers like the Redkiy and Vdumchevy. These ships were part of the Soviet Pacific Fleet. In 1954, he became a political officer on the large warship called the cruiser Kalinin. By 1956, he was in charge of all political officers for the Pacific Fleet's destroyer group. In 1959, he became the main political officer at the naval base in Sovetskaya Gavan.
Leading the Northern Fleet
In 1974, Alexey Sorokin became the chief political officer for the Northern Fleet. This was a very important naval fleet. The next year, in 1975, he was promoted to vice admiral.
Top Ranks and Retirement
By 1980, he was the chief political officer for the entire Soviet Navy. In 1981, he became the deputy chief political officer for all Soviet armed forces. He reached the highest naval rank, Fleet Admiral, in 1988. Alexey Sorokin retired from military service in 1992.
Life After the Military
Even after retiring, Alexey Sorokin stayed active. From 1989 to 1991, he served as a People's Deputy. This meant he was a representative in the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union. He lived in Moscow during his retirement. He also became the president of a group called the International Union of CIS War Veterans (Pensioners) Associations. This group helped former soldiers.
Alexey Sorokin passed away on March 4, 2020. He was 97 years old. He was buried at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery on March 6.
