Alfonso Armada's Life Story
Alfonso Armada was born into a noble family. His family supported the idea of a king ruling Spain.
Early Military Career
When he was young, Armada joined a group called the Nationalists. This was during the Spanish Civil War. He also fought in World War II. He was part of the Blue Division, a group of Spanish soldiers who fought alongside Germany. They took part in the Siege of Leningrad, a long battle in Russia.
Working with the King
Over many years, Armada became a respected military leader. He became a teacher and then an assistant to Juan Carlos. When Juan Carlos became the King of Spain, Armada became part of the Royal Household of Spain. This meant he worked closely with the King.
The 1981 Coup Attempt
Alfonso Armada was a key person in the 1981 Spanish coup d'état attempt. This was a time when some people tried to take control of the Spanish government.
A soldier named Antonio Tejero took over the main building where laws are made, called the Congress of Deputies. Armada went there and pretended to help solve the problem. But soon, people found out that Armada was one of the main planners of the coup. He had even planned to become the new leader of the country.
When Armada met Tejero at the Congress, they disagreed about what to do next. Because of this disagreement, the plan to take over the government failed.
After the Coup
Within five days, Armada lost all his jobs and was arrested. In April 1983, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. However, he was released early in December 1988. This was because of his health. He spent the rest of his life in Rivadulla, a town in Spain. Alfonso Armada passed away in 2013.
